Water chestnuts and jam on wheat?

It is an established fact that when I get busy, grocery shopping is one of the first things to go. (Laundry is another, so let us give thanks that Filene's Basement still offers underwear and socks at rock-bottom prices.)

Anyway, like most people, I have a few staple, must-have foods, and throughout my independent life I managed to never, ever run out of the following:

  • dried pasta
  • minced garlic
  • water chestnuts (I bought a can of them in 2002 for reasons that escape me; I will probably never eat them)
  • peanut butter

These are my go-to ingredients. Come hell, high water, or exam periods, I've been secure in the fact that I will always have these foods on hand; therefore, no matter how busy it gets, no matter how desk-bound I might be, I'll always be able to scrounge some protein and/or carbs.

Moments ago, I just ran out of peanut butter.
